IT and security administrator

Operates identity, network, endpoint, backup, and security controls for a mixed member environment, using automation for consistency while preserving human incident and risk decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain least-privilege access, network separation, supported configurations, and recovery capability.
  • Triage security and availability signals with business and physical context.
  • Document control ownership, exceptions, dependencies, and tested recovery procedures.

Daily tasks

  • Review access, network, printing, backup, and security exceptions requiring action.
  • Support users without bypassing identity, privacy, or change controls.

Weekly tasks

  • Review privileged changes, vulnerabilities, failed jobs, and recurring support causes.
  • Test a selected restore, access, or monitoring control and record evidence.

Monthly tasks

  • Review accounts, suppliers, patches, retention, capacity, and incident actions.
  • Update threat and continuity assumptions with operations leadership.

Revenue-impacting work

  • Protect reliable connectivity and access services that underpin member trust and inventory use.
  • Assess technical feasibility and risk before new products or integrations are promised.

Member-experience work

  • Provide clear, respectful support while minimizing collection of member device information.
  • Communicate outages and security actions with useful scope, alternatives, and updates.

Repetitive administrative work

  • Standard account provisioning, evidence collection, health checks, and review reminders.
  • Producing access-change, backup, vulnerability, and incident status queues.

Dangerous tasks to automate blindly

  • Disabling identities, isolating systems, deleting data, or declaring incidents resolved.
  • Applying patches or network changes without dependency, rollback, and service-impact review.

Stack choices

  • Hybrid: [Managed identity and endpoints combined with locally controlled network, logs, procedures, and backup copies.](../../../stacks/generated/Managed identity and endpoints combined with locally controlled network, logs, procedures, and backup copies./)
  • Self-hosted: [Self-hosted identity, network management, monitoring, ticketing, and backup with redundant administration and tested break-glass access.](../../../stacks/generated/Self-hosted identity, network management, monitoring, ticketing, and backup with redundant administration and tested break-glass access./)

KPIs

  • Access changes completed accurately and privileged access reviewed by accountable owners.
  • Restore objectives demonstrated by tests rather than inferred from successful backup jobs.
  • Security and availability incidents contained, communicated, and followed by owned actions.

30-day improvement plan

  • Inventory identities, networks, administrators, backups, logs, and critical suppliers.
  • Define joiner, mover, leaver, incident, and emergency-access decision points.
  • Test one representative restore and one access revocation end to end.
  • Prioritize remediation by credible exposure and business impact, not scanner score alone.

When to get expert help

  • Active compromise, ransomware, payment exposure, legal notification, or forensic preservation is possible.
  • Network architecture, building controls, identity federation, or recovery design exceeds internal competence.
