oss-osi-approved planned guide

Overview

Roomer is the c0dewhacker self-hosted desk and asset reservation project. Its official repository describes buildings, floors and uploaded plans with bookable assets. A coworking team could explore visual hot-desk discovery in an isolated pilot. Production reliability, security, accessibility and recovery have not been established here.

Cost reality

Self-hosted source is available without a software subscription; server, database, floor-plan preparation and technical support still cost time or money. No managed-service price or support commitment is verified.

Plans, provider terms and prices change; check official sources before making a budget or deployment decision.

Tasks reduced or augmented

Software does not replace community or ops staff. It may reduce or augment:

  • Explore visual desk availability and reservation requests
  • Reduce manual selection of desks from a spreadsheet during a test

Human oversight still needed

  • Check desk accessibility, suitability and actual availability
  • Assess security, backups, support and booking conflicts before any operational trial

Manual process this can replace

Structured task-fit review has not been completed for this tool. Treat the free-text examples above as evaluation prompts, not replacement claims.

Data held

  • user identities

  • building and floor plans

  • desk and asset records

  • reservations

  • Personal data: yes

  • Payment data: no / not primary

Collect only data needed for the pilot and confirm access, deletion and export behavior before operational adoption.

Risks

AreaNotes
Vendor lock-inExport, migration and restore behavior have not been tested; retain a practical manual fallback before depending on the tool.
SecurityReadiness is unverified. Keep the first pilot isolated with synthetic data; review authentication, generated credentials, upload handling, network access and database backups before exposing it.
ComplianceFloor plans and occupancy data can be sensitive; obtain permission and define access and retention before using real locations or member records.
LicensingThe exact project from prior research is c0dewhacker/Roomer, which identifies AGPL-3.0. Do not confuse it with similarly named room, hotel or property products.
OperationalRepository features are not evidence of safe production operation. Release/support policy, security response, migration recovery, accessibility and operator adoption remain unresolved; no memberships, billing or access-control capability is asserted.

Coworking fit

Roles: operations-manager, community-manager, technical-operator

Workflows: desk-hot-desk, room-booking

Problems: replace-spreadsheets, improve-member-experience

Smallest useful experiment

In an isolated environment with synthetic users, upload one non-sensitive sample floor plan and reserve five sample desks, checking conflicts and cancellations before considering any real member data.

Verification

Bounded official-source metadata review only. Features and edition boundaries were read; installation, task-fit evaluation, operator outcomes, integrations, security and recovery were not tested. Retained in Research Backlog; not a recommendation.
